Comparative Psychology, or Animal Psychology, is a multidisciplinary field designed to study the behaviors and cognitive processes of non-human animals. The epistemology of this field draws on many relevant areas of research, including, for example, ethology, general psychology, and evolutionary biology. Findings and research related to this field may be of great importance not only for general knowledge of species behavior but also for the human social sciences.
Objectives and related fields of research
The main purpose of this field of research is to examine the differences or lack thereof in the observed behaviors in many different species. This analysis can ultimately come from many different angles. Differences between species in behavioral characteristics can be used to assess what may or may not be considered "normal" animal behavior. With the introduction of a rule regarding the behavioral characteristics of animals, we can then ask whether or not certain characteristics remain as evolutionarily stable strategies. If this is actually the case for a given trait, genes associated with that trait are more likely to survive the "battle" of natural selection than those associated with less viable traits. A third point of research concerns the physiological mechanisms involved in the development of these behaviors.
